Spontaneous Windows File Sharing via Virtual Groups

چکیده
Although file and printer sharing services have been deployed almost ubiquitously for a long time as part of Microsoft Windows, only recent peer-to-peer applications popularized file-sharing on a global scale. As the Windows CIFS protocol was designed for local area networks, its use has been confined to relatively small environments. We propose a mechanism to set up spontaneous virtual groups that allow to use legacy Windows file and printer sharing globally in virtual LANs.

Examining VMware
VMware is a virtual-machine platform that provides an abstraction of x86 PC hardware so that multiple operating systems can run unmodified and at the same time on a standard PC. For developers, this means you can run multiple development environments on your desktop without rebooting or repartitioning. In the process, you can isolate and protect operating environments (and the applications and ...
متن کاملFramework for Implementing File Systems in Windows NT
This thesis presents FIFS (Framework for Implementing File Systems), a framework that facilitates academic file system research under Windows NT. FIFS addresses the high cost of file system development under Windows NT by providing a simple user-mode development environment. The environment is a Common Internet File System (CIFS) loopback server that seamlessly integrates with NT’s Installable ...
متن کاملOn the Effectiveness of Internal Patching Against File-Sharing Worms
File-sharing worms have been terrorizing Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems in recent years. Existing defenses relying on users’ individual recoveries or limiting users’ file-sharing activities are ineffective. Automated patching tools such as Microsoft Windows Update and Symantec Security Update are currently the most popular vehicles for eliminating and containing Internet worms, but they are not nec...
متن کاملA Study of Security Patch Dissemination for Combating File-sharing Worms
Worm attacks in file-sharing applications have been terrorizing P2P networks in recent years. Existing solutions to these imminent threats are rather passive by relying on user’s individual recovery or limiting filesharing services. To be more scalable and effective in combating file-sharing worms, automated and systematic countermeasures must be developed. In this work, we study the feasibilit...
متن کاملImproving Distributed File System Performance in Virtual Machine Environments
Virtual machine (VM) systems have traditionally used virtual disks for file storage. Recently, there has been interest in using distributed file systems as a way to provide data storage to guest virtual machines, with the file server running on the same physical machine. Potential advantages include finegrained data sharing, data protection, versioning, and backup to multiple guests from one ce...
